Velscope™ Health Exams

Why are Health Exams Important?

Velscope health exams can save your life. Minuk Denture is proud to present the VELScope™ system!

Oral cancer is one of the few types of cancer that has not experienced a significantly reduced mortality rate in the past 30 years. In fact, the number of North Americans developing oral cancer is three times the number who develop cervical cancer. Oral cancer kills one person every hour, 24 hours a day in North America. Oral cancer is discovered in late stages about 70% of the time, and often that is simply too late.

  • The incidence of oral cancer increased 11% in the United States in 2007
  • Unlike several other cancers, the survival rate for oral cancer has remained unchanged for decades
  • The overall 5-year survival rate for oral cancer is 52%, but when discovered early, it increases to 80% – 90%
  • Unfortunately, only 35% of oral cancer cases are diagnosed in the early stages. Why? Because there have been few advances made in screening techniques and there are significant limitations inherent to white light and chemiluminescence light examination of the oral mucosa
  • Pre-malignant changes actually start below the surface, at the basement membrane. These changes may not be apparent to the naked eye until the disease progresses to the surface

In many cases, early detection is the key to survival. Our new VELScope oral cancer screening system can provide the early warning you need! Along with our conventional oral screening exam, which includes looking inside your mouth for any lesions that may be visible to the naked eye and feeling your neck for any suspicious bumps, we can use VELscope™ to literally see beneath the surface to detect potentially dangerous growths we might have otherwise missed.

How Does it Work?

The VELscope™ System Handpiece emits a safe blue light into the oral cavity (which exciteds the tissue from the surface of the epithelium through to the basement membrane and into the stroma beneath, causing it to floresce.) Minuk Denture is then able to immediately view the different fluorescence responses to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue. In fact, the VELscope™ System is the only adjunctive device cleared by the FDA and Health Canada to help discover oral mucosal lesions that might not be apparent or visible to the naked eye, and to help surgeons determine the appropriate surgical margin for tumor excision. Under examination with the VELscope™ System, abnormal tissue typically appears as an irregular, dark area that stands out against the otherwise normal, green fluorescence pattern of surrounding healthy tissue.

The VELscope™ exam takes about two minutes as part of a regular hygiene check-up, involves no pain or inconvenience and is completely safe.
What If We Find Something?

In most cases, the VELscope™ exam will indicate that there is nothing to worry about. However, it is of course possible that some suspicious areas could be revealed. In that case, it could very well be that the suspicious looking area is of little or no concern. It may be caused by chewing the inside of your cheek or by irritation from dentures. If necessary, we may ask you to come back in a few weeks so that we may take another look.

If the area has improved in the meantime, we’ll know that oral cancer was not a factor. If the area has not improved, we will recommed further exams, which may include a biopsy that can be evaluated by an oral pathologist. In the unlikley event that the biopsy reveals cancerous or pre-cancerous tissues, you will be referred for appropriate treatment.

Fortunately the survival rate for oral cancer, when discovered at early stages, is extremely high. That is why it is so important that you have an oral cancer screening once a year, or twice a year if you smoke or chew tobacco. And it’s also why we have invested in this new technology. We think you’ll find the additional cost for this exam to be very reasonable and the cost may be covered by your insurance company. Contact us today to book your appointment.
